David Bengtson, one of the finest landscape designers in Central Arkansas, learned his trade from the ground up – literally.
The soft-spoken Arkansan who lives in Maumelle references the state’s native flowers, shrubs and trees like they’re his good friends, and is as happy on his computer designing everything from small, intimate projects to elaborate designs that are part of largescale projects.
Whatever the project size, David, known on the job for his friendly banter, Indiana Jones-styled hat and eye for small details, enjoys taking a project from start to finish and watching his work bloom and grow.
Perhaps that’s because landscaping in his blood. His grandfather was “a green thumb,” and David remembers noticing his landscaping designs when he was only eight – the intricate brickwork that lined the flowerbeds at his home in Bryant.
David’s entry into landscaping came in high school, when he worked at a nursery, memorizing species of plants. Later he studied under the respected landscape architect Mark Porter, who provided David experience in design, maintenance, sprinkler installation, overseeing crews of landscapers and managing large, wholesale nurseries.
Bengtson Landscape has now been in business more than 20 years, with David creating inspiring landscape designs that boast intricate rock work, lighting and water features combined with creative plantings of flowers, shrubs and trees. He oversees his crews – working alongside them – until his vision becomes perfection. That’s what sets Bengtson Landscape apart from the others. When you hire Bengtson Landscape, you see David – every day – ensuring every “i” is dotted and “t” is crossed and no short cuts are taken. His long list of contacts mean he’s on a first-name basis with the best growers in the state, and that he will plant the finest Japanese Maples from Oregon or the most gorgeous Magnolias and Crepe Myrtles from Southern Mississippi. He listens to you to make sure your preferences are incorporated into your design, then brings in the preeminent plants, trees, water features or stones to bring it to life.
Several years ago, at the request of satisfied customers who wanted their landscape creations to remain beautiful, the company launched its maintenance division. Today, several Bengtson landscape crews are on the job daily pruning trees, trimming bushes, planting seasonal flowers, laying mulch and handling the regular maintenance of commercial businesses and homeowners’ outdoor areas. At the helm of the maintenance division is David’s wife, Brandi.
Brandi enjoys owning a small business because it allows her the opportunity to interact with the one-on-one with customers. An avid equestrian, Brandi enjoys everything outdoors.
